QUE SE APRUEBE UN IMPUESTO SOBRE LAS TRANSACCIONES FINANCIERAS EN FAVOR DE LA GENTE Y EL PLANETA YA !

Introduce a financial transaction tax for people and the planet now!

Señores Miembros del G-20:

El sector financiero ha causado la actual crisis histórica, como ustedes han reconocido en sus documentos. El crecimiento exponencial del sector financiero basado únicamente en el beneficio de la especulación a corto plazo ha generado una economia de casino. Con el estallido de la burbuja más reciente, millones de hombres y mujeres han perdido sus empleos. Gentes de todo el mundo se han hundido aún más en la pobreza y hoy pasan hambre cien millones más de personas.

Ustedes han movilizado cientos de miles de dólares para salvar a los bancos y al sistema financiero. A mismo tiempo, ni la emergencia social ni la climática están siendo abordadas con la urgencia política que merecen y con los recursos necesarios para respaldarla.

Durante décadas las grandes entidades de servicios financieros se beneficiaron de la ausencia de regulación efectiva y son ampliamente responsables de la crisis. Creemos que es hora de que paguen la justa parte de los costes de la recuperación. El instrumento más efectivo para lograrlo sería un Impuesto sobre las Transacciones Financieras, porque

• • Generaría los fondos que se necesitan para pagar los costes sociales de la crisis así como para combatir la pobreza global y el cambio climático.

  • Contribuiría a la mayor estabilidad del sistema financiero reduciendo la especulación y la excesiva liquidez.

Que sigan los negocios financieros como siempre no es una opción. Les apremiamos para que en la próxima cumbre del G-20 en Toronto (Canadá), los días 26-27 de junio de 2010, adopten el acuerdo de implantar un impuesto sobre las transacciones financieras; para que las palabras vayan respaldadas con accciones.

Dear Members of the G20,

The financial sector has caused the current historic crisis. The exponential growth of the financial sector with a focus on short-term speculative gain has created a ‘casino economy’. With the bursting of the most recent bubble, millions of men and women have lost their jobs. People all over the world have been plunged further into poverty and a hundred million more people are hungry today.

You have mobilised hundreds of billions of dollars to save the banks and the financial system. At the same time, neither the social nor the climate emergency is being addressed with the political urgency it deserves and with the necessary financial resources to back it.

Financial services corporations benefited for decades from the absence of meaningful regulation and are largely responsible for the crisis. I believe it is time for them to pay their fair share of the costs of recovery. A Financial Transactions Tax would be the most effective instrument to secure this. It would:

· Generate funds needed to pay for the social costs of the crisis as well as to fight global poverty and climate change.

· Contribute to greater stability of the financial system by reducing speculation and excessive liquidity.

Business as usual is not an option. I urge you to decide at your next meeting inToronto, Canada (26-27 June 2010) to introduce a tax on financial transactions. Back your words with action.
